Abstract
My work on this project has followed the full process of scoring a film as it would often be done in the professional world. Last semester, I scored an 8-minute short film by Mathieu Auvray, produced by Blender Foundation, called Cosmos Laundromat. Blender Foundation provides a variety of educational tools for creatives, including short films without music for composers to practice scoring. I began by creating a cue sheet and then composed an original score using virtual instruments in Pro Tools. Virtual instruments are a common tool in most small- and medium-budget media productions. This included working with tempo changes, MIDI automation, and instrument sample libraries. Virtual instrument samples are often enhanced with live recorded performances in many industry workflows. Following this practice, I adapted my score mockup from Pro Tools into sheet music using notation software. This process included adding, adjusting, or changing instrumentation as needed, and completing score and parts preparation. I then organized a recording session for the score with live performers and a conductor. Throughout the session, I chose microphones, prepared the recording session in Pro Tools, and monitored and ran the recording. To simplify scheduling, there were a small number of players, so each instrument group was recorded at least two times to imitate a full orchestra. I am currently working on mixing and mastering the recorded session and combining it with the virtual instruments as needed.
