Advertisement and response letter for hiring out slaves, Charleston, South Carolina, 1861. [Page 1] Advertisement from the Graniteville Company on November 15, 1861, to hire "active, smart negro Boys between the ages of 15 and 20, to work in the Factory during the war," and response letter from A. E. Brisbane offering 12 slaves for hire. Brisbane also wants to place a man and his wife, parents to 4 of the slaves, to go with them, Charleston, November 23, 1861. [Page 2] Continuation of A. E. Brisbane's letter offering to hire out 12 slaves for factory work at the Graniteville Company during the war, and stating he has women and young girls he also wants to hire out.
Charleston Novb 23rd 1861 / [Newspaper advertisement pasted to the letter:] "Negros Wanted - The Graniteville Company wish to hire active, smart Negro Boys between the ages of 15 and 20, to work in the Factory during the war. For particulars apply to J. J. Gregg, Treasurer, at Graniteville. +6 November 15." / "J. J. Gregg, Esq- / Sir - The within enclosed advertisement has caused me to apply to you - . . ."
