Abstract
It is only in recent years that the attention of
students of literature has been directed to the merit s of the
poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, a poet who, paradoxical as
it may seem, is rightly classified as the modern among the
Victorians. Although Father Hopkins' brief span of life was
timed while the twentieth century was still in the offing, his
poetry takes its place unquestionably with that produced
by lyricists of our own day.
The collected poems from the pen of this poet- priest
form a slender volume of rare and delightful lyrics; lyrics
which are full of a tender and luminous beauty, yet woven
with a tremulous ingenuity that frequently repels the superficial reader; tries the endurance of the casual reader; and
interests and attracts the earnest reader. These poems have
given rise to a number of questions in the minds of students
as to the author's place in literature, whether or not he is
a major poet or a major craftsman ; why he rebelled against
the adopted poetical forms of his own day and created new
ones of his own. This study has been made in quest of a
possible response for these and other queries regarding the
lyrics of Gerard Manley Hopkins. Furthermore, the thesis
was written with the hope of contributing a better understanding, a clearer interpretation, and a greater appreciation of
the poet's works , that these may be to others , as they have
been to the writer , a source of unfeigned delight .
