Abstract
When I had to determine a field of specialization during my doctorate at the University of Iowa, I chose Latin American theater. Reason: my father and his brother Nazario were actors of the anarchist group Ateneo Obrero, of Iquique. In 1963 I had the chance to see The invaders of Egon Wolff under the direction of Víctor Jara. All this on account of the death at ninety years of one of the most solid playwrights of the Chilean national scene. The interest for his theater led me to a collection of what I considered the best articles about his dramatic production, both Chilean and North American, The Dramaturgy of Egon Wolff. Critical interpretations (1971-1981) . On my first return to Chile in 1980, I went to see the representation of José. A phone call puts me in touch with him, and he agrees to provide part of his time for a conversation that took place at Café Colonia in Mac lver with Agustinas. Physically, he remembers Curt Jurgens, but his Chileanness springs from his language and manners - spontaneous, open, not hesitant to mention cases and names to illustrate his argument. The conversation focuses on José , his latest work premiered at the Municipal Theater by the Chamber Theater Company.
