Abstract
An Optimal Control was determined for a Cost function which represents a compromise between the minimum control-effort and minimum time. The system to be controlled was chosen to be an inertial system. whose transfer function can be represented as $1/S^2$ in Laplacian variables. The studies have shown that it is impossible to minimize the time and the control-effort simultaneously. Thus, a compromise between the minimum control-effort and the minimum time was necessary. The results clearly indicate that the designer, having selected a relative importance for time and control-effort, can determine the optimal time for solution, and minimize the total Cost. For the particular second-order system chosen, closed form solutions were obtained.
