Description
Image shows the report's title page. By order of Louis XVI, a commission was appointed from the Faculté de Médecine and the Académie Royale des Sciences to investigate the practices of Mesmer, or rather of his disciple d'Eslon. The report of their findings, which dealt the death blow to the movement in Paris, usually goes under Franklin's name. Franklin, at that time at the height of his career as the representative of the United States at the Court of Louis XVI, had attained some reputation as an authority on mesmerism. He had known Mesmer some years earlier and was familiar with his practices. Franklin was president of the commission but was ill with the gout in his home at Passy; the other members of the commission actually conducted the necessary experiments. In the above translation, this famous report is preceded by the translation of a report of the Société Royale de Médecine, referring to its own simultaneous investigation of animal magnetism. The Historical Introduction was written by the translator.
