Abstract
The subject of this work focuses on providing a methodology to analyze the mechanical performance of dry-fabrics for their application on inflatable pressure vessels. The first part of the work contains a comprehensive literature review on the existing analytical and numerical methods for analyzing textiles and pressure vessels. In addition, a summary of the key components of the analyses is provided. Two numerical approaches based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Digital Element Method (DEM) were compared for analyzing the mechanical response of the Representative Volume Element (RVE) of a textile material under different loading conditions. The most suitable approach for analyzing the type of structure considered in this work was selected to obtain the unit cell’s homogenized properties. The mechanical performance of a glass-fiber inflatable tube was compared to the performance of a glass-fiber filament wound tube with identical dimensions. To achieve this, the elasticity solution for thick-walled tubes with an internal pressure loading condition was used together with the previously obtained homogenized properties for the unit cell. This work analyzes the limitations of this theory for non-linear materials such as dry-fabrics. The strength variability of the filaments was taken into consideration by using the well-known Weibull’s model. In addition, a damage model for the virtual filaments was developed and implemented into the unit cell using Abaqus/Explicit finite element program.
