Abstract
Associations exist between poor oral health status (POHS) and multiple health
conditions among the elderly: localized infection and pain,increased risk of respiratory
infections, under-nutrition, and unplanned weight loss. POHS has also
been associated with challenges in ability to eat, speak clearly, and socialize, negatively
impacting quality of life. A large proportion of older adults are unable to
follow recommended teeth and denture hygiene practices due to limited income
and lack of dental insurance. The goal of this research was to assess the oral
health status of low-income seniors, as well as their oral health quality of life
and self-care habits.
