Abstract
This piece is heavily inspired by Ryo Noda's piece "Phoenix". His works have a certain ethereal quality to them that I find very attractive. Runnin' on Fumes was first created in 2023 as a 12-tone etude to practice using tone rows and interval-class vectors, later I expanded it. The opening ideas are very free and somewhat melancholic. Imagine how it feels to be done for the day utterly exhausted and ready to sleep. This is the feeling that pervades the piece, an atmosphere of permeating tiredness. The static, listless opening is suddenly uprooted by a very rhythmic mantra, a moment of focus cutting through the haziness. As the piece progresses, the interval class gradually changes, becoming less grounded. Suddenly, a brief, metered passage occurs leading directly into a cadenza. After the intense cadenza, the ending slowly fades away, with the last note decaying into nothingness. I encourage you to relax and be in the present moment while listening to this piece.
