Abstract
Linear programming techniques have been used for only a short time in comparison with the more traditional forms of industrial engineering. The majority of the linear programming techniques have been developed since 1947, the year that George Danzig developed the simplex procedure. This thesis was undertaken on the premise that certain of these techniques could be successfully applied to the scheduling of products through a critical (or "bottleneck") process whose output is controlled by a fixed speed monorail conveyor. There are many examples of such operations in industry and many industrial engineers have long suspected that the scheduling of them leaves something to be desired from the viewpoint of overall corporate profit optimization. Therefore, this thesis will attempt to show how the output of a "bottleneck" conveyor controlled process may be optimized using the basic simplex techniques.
