Navarro-Serrano, Jose Enrique. 2017. Chapter 7 -- Global Bolano: Reading, Writing, and Publishing in a Neoliberal World. In: Roberto Bolano as World Literature, Book Series: Literatures as World Literature, ed.Nicholas Birns and Juan E. De Castro, pp 139-150
Abstract
In this work I will explore a series of formal and thematic characteristics of Bolano's narrative that stand in opposition to the literature of hyperindustrial capitalist society yet, paradoxically, may have contributed at least in part to its successful reception. On the one hand, I will analyze certain stylistic traits in Bolano's writing that may explain its absorbing effect. On the other hand, I will study two themes: first, the motif of the literary quest, embodied here in the figure of a missing male or female writer; and second, the transnational journey. I will relate these two with one of the effects of neoliberalism: the creation of publishing conglomerates.
