Building collections in IRs from external data sources
(2012-10) Deng, Sai; Matveyeva, Susan J.
This presentation will address the experiments of building research publication collections from external data sources such as PubMed, IEEE Xplore and Web of Science in the DSpace based institutional repository (IR). To get data from other sources is an alternative way to develop collections for different disciplines since author self-deposit has not become a common practice for institutional repositories. This is also an effort in line with the current metadata cataloging trend of moving from item by item cataloging to batch processing of metadata, repurposing of metadata between different systems and communities, and providing value-added data services to students and faculty in an IR. It will discuss the options to batch transform, enhance and transfer over 720 student and faculty publications from Medline format in PubMed to Dublin Core (DC) in DSpace. In the PubMed-DSpace project, PubMed provided XML is mapped and transformed to DCXML, exported to and enhanced in Excel, divided to separate departmental collections and batch loaded to DSpace server. It will talk about project planning, workflow management and record prototype creation based on the user needs. It will cover technical details including selection of metadata fields, mapping of Medline to DC, name authority check, content enrichment such as adding more DOI and other links, descriptions, copyright information and the article peer-review status, data normalization, data accuracy and consistency check. It will discuss the implementation and customization of an add-on to facilitate DSpace data batch import. At the same time it will discuss the challenges in adding institutional research outcome u sing this new approach such as: the advantages and disadvantages of the different options to transform Medline to DC, data acquisition and content recruitment, metadata granularity and generality, selection of multiple subject types and identifiers, content enhancement, and copyright compliance. The cases of collecting data from IEEE Xplore and Web of Science, enhancing data in spreadsheets and batch load it to separate departmental collections in DSpace will be included. Other possibilities of adding data from external databases and the open web to the IR will also be discussed.

    FRBR Training
(Wichita State University Libraries, 2011-09-20) Deng, Sai
This presentation introduces “Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records” (FRBR), a conceptual model the new cataloging standard “Resource Description and Access” (RDA) is built on. It gives a detailed explanation to the entities, relationships and attributes defined in the model. It is designed with many examples, images and diagrams to be visually appealing and easier to understand. It also discusses the new perspective FRBR utilizes: emphasizing “user tasks” of finding, identifying, selecting and obtaining entities by mapping attributes and relationships to these tasks, with the same objective of finding and collocating information in a bibliographic universe. At the end, it shows several cases of FRBR implementation and “FRBR-ized” display.

Promoting Library Advocacy, Diversity, Family Literacy, and Global Outreach
(ALA (American Library Association) Annual Conference 2011., 2011-06-25) Chou, Min; Lee, Esther; Tseng, Sally; Deng, Sai
The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is an ALA affiliate. In the 2011 Poster Session at the Diversity and Outreach Fair, CALA will showcase its mission, programs and services to diverse people of all ages, with emphasis on its library advocacy, family literacy, Mail-A-Book service to homebound, and global outreach. CALA representatives will present at its poster location to interact with visitors and answer questions. This project aims to broaden CALA's visibility and provide more opportunities for CALA to better serve a wider community.

RDA Training I: A Gentle Introduction
(Wichita State University Libraries, 2011-05-17) Deng, Sai
This presentation gives a gentle introduction to the new cataloging standard “Resource Description and Access” (RDA). It starts from the conceptual models and principles RDA is built on and the rationale to switch from AACR (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules) to RDA in a digital environment. It covers the main changes from AACR2 to RDA, the terminology changes and the new fields in RDA. It gives emphasis on how to identify RDA records and offers many examples in OCLC and in WSU Libraries. It provides quick sheets for copy catalogers, serial catalogers and music catalogers as brief guides to RDA. At the end, it touches on the status of RDA Testing, what can be done in RDA Toolkit, and some system and policy issues. This is the first of a series of RDA training sessions at WSU Libraries.

Building new interfaces for Shocker Open Access Repository
(KLA-CULS (Kansas Library Association- College and University Library Section) 2010 Conference., 2010-10-15) Deng, Sai
Wichita State University Libraries recently upgraded its DSpace based institutional repository, Shocker Open Access Repository (SOAR), to the new version 1.6.2 with an XML-based interface “Manakin”. Manakin gives the possibility of creating different interfaces called “themes” and themes provide branding for various communities and new functions and visual effects for images and other collections. This presentation will address the customization of Manakin and the implementation of new functions and features from an institution’s experience. It will discuss how we create the local theme, test the interfaces for different communities and an image gallery theme for image collections. It will address details including modifying page structures, customizing content, and adding new navigation menus (e.g. “Share” and “Information”). It will show how we use Firebug and IE8 Developer Tools to preview CSS changes, how we modify XSLT stylesheets and work in a unix environment. These experiences and techniques can be applied by other institutions which use DSpace. This presentation will also give some reflections on working with system and with a team from the perspective of a Metadata Catalog Librarian in a medium sized library.
