Abstract: This presentation will address WSU Libraries' implementation of external programming to enhance workflow in its institutional Repository, SOAR (Shocker Open Access Repository). It will discuss several cases including the batch import of archeology image collection, Graduate Research and Scholarly Papers, and some herbarium samples. It will describe the add-on code to facilitate DSpace batch import procedure and cover the processes involved, such as metadata preparation in Excel, program installation, program customization, metadata transformation, and data batch upload to the DSpace server. Each generated Submission Information Package includes a Dublin Core XML record, corresponding images and files, and a content list file. Batch processing can streamline and enhance the workflow and it is an important step in the development of SOAR. It can be applied to many other projects in the future. Abstract: This presentation will discuss the speaker’s experiment of creating featured websites from specialized data in Voyager ILS in a wider context. These websites can be seamlessly integrated into public programming events and library instruction sessions to introduce local authors, featured collections and resources in a specific area and they can be faculty author books, leisure reading, new book lists and local Art Museum collection. The websites of Faculty Research Publications and Women’s Studies Video Resources at Wichita State University will be showcased. The speaker will talk about the model used to create the websites: selecting data from Oracle database, presenting SQL query results, and creating the websites using web programming for browsing and search. The option of transforming data from MARC to DC will be discussed. This model can be applied to different sets of data by slightly modifying the query, the programming and the web appearance. Some features of public websites such as linking each record back to OPAC, adding RSS feeds, Syndetic and other cover images to the websites will be addressed. Other possible approaches of creating specialized websites from Voyager data will also be investigated. Finally, the speaker will discuss disintegration of library data versus integration of library data and the pros and cons of each method. Abstract: We propose to present a model of building public websites from specialized data in Voyager. The website of Faculty Research Publications at Wichita State University will be featured. This presentation will first explore the need of publicly presenting SQL query results from Voyager database, and these needs can include showcasing featured collections such as leisure reading, World War II Newsmap posters, featured authors and new book lists. In presenting our featuring website, we will discuss how we select faculty publications data from the oracle database and store it in Microsoft Access, and how we create the website using ASP, JavaScript, XHTML and CSS for web browsing and search. It will also show some features like connecting each record in this website to OPAC correspondingly, adding RSS feeds, Syndetic and other cover images. Some code will be disposed and future possibilities will also be discussed. Description: Presented at the MPLA/KLA Annual Conference, Wichita, KS, April 3, 2009. Abstract: When library needs change, how does technical services respond? In the last two years, Wichita State started an Institutional Repository, created an Electronic Resources position, and coped with the retirement of a long-term Acquisitions Manager. We'll describe our process of communicating and cooperating to define new roles to meet changing needs. Abstract: At WSU Libraries, Special Collections and Technical Services had been creating in-house inventories in Excel and MARC records in OCLC separately for their projects, including for a collection of 1800 poems by American poet Albert Goldbarth. This presentation will address how we repurposed those brief Special Collections Excel records, enriching and manipulating this metadata before transforming it into MARC for loading into OCLC and our local Voyager catalog. In a similar workflow, metadata describing ETDs had been captured for our institutional repository and for OCLC separately. By harvesting DC metadata from DSpace/SOAR (Shocker Open Access Repository) and transforming it using XSLT in MarcEdit, we were able to automate the process of creating MARC records for OCLC. Both cases of metadata repurposing promote the sharing and reuse of metadata resources in different systems and greatly improve our cataloging workflow. This presentation will analyze the tools utilized to perform the transformation, Delimited Text Translator, Metadata Harvester, and MarcEdit developed by Terry Reese. It will discuss some common challenges in metadata mapping and transformation, and what we did to resolve some of the issues in our cases. It will also address data integrity, data loss, and data maintenance issues across the resulting metadata repositories.
